In this Awaken Gold review, I’m going to tell you everything you need to know about the nootropic supplement Awaken Gold. There’s even a discount code at the end of the article for 20% off, if you’re interested.
In any case, there are tons of articles online that will tell you how great Awaken Gold is, but are they giving you the whole story? Are they comprehensive enough to be objective?
Do they talk about noopept being patented, but not approved by the FDA? What about phenylethylamine(PEA) potentially causing allergic reactions?
Granted, no supplement is perfect. But in a market where the motto is, “buyer beware”, you can never be too careful.
So without further ado, let’s get right into it, shall we?
Awakened Alchemy – Company Culture
The science of alchemy is traditionally known as the ability to change one substance to another, like when Rumpelstiltskin spun straw into gold.
According to the folks at Awakened Alchemy, we can transform our minds in a similar manner. We all have the ability to become better versions of ourselves.
Their mission is to provide the best nootropics to nourish people’s minds, and elevate their consciousness.
Corneliu Giurgea, the psychiatrist who first coined the term ‘Nootropic’ in 1972, was once quoted as saying:
“Man will not wait passively for millions of years before evolution offers him a better brain.”.
I could be wrong, but it looks like Awakened Alchemy took a page right out of Giurgea’s book.
Clearly, they want to give evolution a nudge forward.
This might explain why Awaken Gold places so much emphasis on enhancing neuroplasticity…
What is Neuroplasticity? – The Ability to Adapt?
You could think of neuroplasticity as the mental flexibility needed to learn new skills, or establish new pathways in the brain.
Not surprisingly, Awaken Gold is known for improving memory, mental clarity, creativity, energy level, motivation, and mood.
This is completely in line with their overall strategy for cognitive enhancement.
Personally, I like how Awakened Alchemy is encouraging people to see nootropics as nutrients for the brain. I always think of nootropics as a new type of multi-vitamin.
They just focus more on improving brain health.
Awakened Alchemy is also encouraging people to make smarter lifestyle choices, like getting more sleep, regular exercise, and effectively managing stress factors.
They offer a free guide book on their home page that goes over tips and tricks for better brain health. There’s also a blog with articles covering the same topic.
So the most important question in my mind (double entendre intended), is this: if someone is doing all the right things to optimize their brain function, how much of a boost can a supplement like Awaken Gold provide?
Let’s check it out!
Awaken Gold – What’s in the Bottle?
The dosages listed below are for 2 capsules, and Awakened Alchemy recommends taking 2-4 capsules/day.
If you’re completely new to nootropics, I recommend starting out with 1-2 capsules, and seeing how you feel. Then you can adjust your intake for best results.
Basically, I’m going to go over the benefits of each ingredient.
Then I’ll compare the dosages provided in Awaken Gold to the amounts recommended for each constituent when they’re taken as solo nootropics.
Let’s get to it!
Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin)
Vitamin B12 is required for nerve tissue repair, and the growth of new brain cells.
It also acts as a catalyst for the synthesis of neurotransmitters.
Supplementing with B12 has been shown to improve energy levels, cognition, mental flexibility, and mood.
Unfortunately, our ability to absorb it can decline with age, and people over the age of 50 might have to take more to see any real benefits.
The recommended dosages are:
- 1-25 mcg/day for people 18-50 years old
- 25-100 mcg for people 50+
Awaken Gold provides 25 mcg/day with 2 capsules, and 50 mcg/day with 4 capsules.
This dosage is perfect, and it should prove to be effective, even if you’re an old guy like me.
(He smiled wryly)
PEA is sometimes referred to as the ‘Love Drug’ in chocolate.
It optimizes neurotransmitter levels by preventing them from breaking down. In particular, when dopamine and serotonin concentrations remain high, we can experience a state of euphoria.
Phenylethylamine also increases neurotransmitter release into the synapses each time a neuron fires.
These effects result in elevated mood, better short term memory, enhanced creativity, stress protection, and greater motivation.
The recommended dosage for PEA can range anywhere from 100 mg/day to 1,500 mg/day. Absorption rates vary according to age and other factors.
People using MAO inhibitors, who have PKU, or are allergic to amines should not take PEA. Please consult with a medical professional if you have any of these conditions or concerns.
Awaken Gold yields 350 mg with 2 capsules, and 700 mg with 4 capsules.
This dosage is prudent, and should work just fine for most people.
CDP Choline (Citicoline)
CDP choline is a specific form of choline that has the ability to provide the brain with 2 important substances: choline and cytidine.
I like to call this effect the ‘CDP Choline One-Two Punch’.
Choline is used as a raw material for the growth of new brain cells, as well as the synthesis of acetylcholine.
Cytidine gets converted to uridine, which is also needed for the development of new neurons. Uridine encourages dendrites to branch out, promoting greater communication between brain cells.
Finally, uridine is a precursor for dopamine and acetylcholine.
Supplementing with CDP choline improves learning ability, attention, mental clarity, reasoning ability, decision making, and provides an overall sense of well-being.
The ideal dosage for CDP choline is 250-500 mg/day, and Awaken Gold offers 225-450 mg/day.
I consider this dosage a bit stingy, but it should still provide the desired effects.
Ashwagandha Extract (as KSM-66)
Ashwagandha protects brain cells from damage by acting as an antioxidant and regulating stress factors.
It also improves brain health by accelerating the reproduction of neurons and neurotransmitter receptor sites.
Finally, it improves the efficiency of serotonin, GABA, and acetylcholine.
Supplementing with ashwagandha improves learning ability, concentration, relieves anxiety, and elevates mood.
The recommended dosage for ashwagandha can range from 100 mg/day to 1,000 mg/day.
Lower dosages are adequate for stress management. Higher doses are needed to see improvements in cognition.
The best results are usually seen at the 500-600 mg/day mark.
Awaken Gold has 150 mg in 2 capsules, and 300 mg in 4 capsules.
This means it should manage stress factors well, but won’t significantly benefit cognition.
Unfortunately, ashwagandha appears to be under-dosed.
L-Theanine is an amino acid that’s naturally present in coffee and green tea, and is sometimes extracted from food sources like sunflower lecithin.
It’s claim to fame is the ability to encourage a state of relaxation and focused attention at the same time.
Theanine supplementation also increases Alpha Brainwave activity, which helps enhance creativity and innovation.
Last but not least, it improves the effectiveness of the neurotransmitters dopamine, serotonin, and GABA.
Theanine provides anxiety control, better concentration, expands creativity, lowers blood pressure, improves sleep patterns, and elevates mood.
The ideal dosage for L-Theanine is 100-200 mg/day.
Awaken Gold contains 100 mg in 2 capsules, and 200 mg in 4 capsules.
L-Tyrosine (as NALT)
Tyrosine is best known as a performance enhancer.
It’s an amino acid used to synthesize dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine, instead of building muscle.
N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine (NALT) is a form of tyrosine that can easily cross the blood-brain barrier, so it’s commonly included in a lot of pre-made nootropic stacks.
NALT improves short-term memory(or working memory), attention, multitasking ability, stress resistance, motivation, and stabilizes mood.
The recommended dosage for NALT is 150-350 mg/day.
Awaken Gold only ponies up 100 mg/day with 2 capsules, and 200 mg/day with 4 capsules.
The dosage provided here is a bit light.
I’d like to see more NALT in the formula.
Uridine 5′-Monophosphate (UMP)
Uridine is essential to the growth of new brain cells, synapses, and dendrites.
It’s one of the 4 essential amino acids used for RNA and DNA coding. In fact, uridine is so good for brain health that it’s often found in baby formula!
Uridine 5′-Monophosphate, or UMP, is a form of uridine that easily crosses the blood-brain barrier.
UMP also provides essential building blocks for the synthesis of dopamine and acetylcholine.
Uridine improves memory, learning, reasoning ability, decision making, provides better focus, and elevates mood.
The recommended daily dosage of UMP is 150-250 mg twice per day, which translates to a total intake of 300-500 mg/day.
Awaken Gold gives us 150 mg/day with 2 capsules, and 300 mg/day with 4 capsules.
This dosage is almost exactly half of what is recommended.
The ‘knee-jerk’ reaction I have to this is to feel disappointed.
PS is best known for increasing energy level and improving neuroplasticity.
It encourages the release of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) in the brain, which in turn results in accelerated neural metabolism.
PS has a similar effect on mitochondria, pushing them to multiply in number, and rev up their activity.
Finally, it promotes the development of more neurotransmitter receptor sites, and keeps the membrane surface at the synapses more fluid and pliable.
PS increases energy, mental clarity, learning ability, concentration, and improves verbal reasoning skills.
The ideal dosage for PS is 300 mg/day.
Awaken Gold offers 100 mg/day with 2 capsules, and 200 mg/day with 4 capsules.
We might be tempted to think there’s not enough PS here, but PS is found in a lot of foods, and can be stored by the body for a rainy day.
Long story short, this dosage should provide excellent benefits.
N-Phenylacetyl-N-Propylglycine Ethyl Ester (Noopept)
Noopept has tons of benefits, but I would say it’s greatest advantage is it’s ability to promote neurogenesis.
It encourages additional production of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) in the brain.
This in turn facilitates new brain cell growth, and improves overall cognitive function significantly.
Noopept also acts as an antioxidant, increases Alpha brainwave activity, optimizes acetylcholine, and improves its’ efficiency.
Supplementing with noopept improves memory, focus, learning ability, neuroplasticity, creativity, relieves anxiety, elevates mood, and enhances long term brain health.
The recommended dosage for noopept is 10-30 mg/day.
Awaken Gold provides 20 mg/day with 2 capsules, and 40 mg/day with 4 capsules.
This is a generous amount, and should provide all the expected benefits.
Pyrroloquinoline Quinone (PQQ)
PQQ is a powerful antioxidant that acts as a fertilizer for mitochondria.
It’s 5,000 times as effective as vitamin C at absorbing free radicals, and increases energy metabolism indirectly by encouraging mitochondria to multiply.
PQQ also stimulates the release of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), which encourages neurogenesis and improves brain health.
It’s sometimes referred to as a ‘Longevity Vitamin’ because of it’s ability to boost energy levels and prevent premature aging at the cellular level.
Extra PQQ in the diet increases mental energy, clarity, learning ability, provides greater physical endurance, and generally makes people feel good.
The recommended dosage for PQQ is 10-20 mg/day, and that’s EXACTLY what Awaken Gold supplies.
Piperine (as Bioperine)
Piperine is the active ingredient found in black pepper.
The ‘Wild Card Feature’ it offers is its’ ability to increase the bioavailability of other nootropics. In other words, nootropics taken together with piperine are absorbed more completely.
This naturally allows them to provide more benefit than if they were taken on their own.
In addition, piperine is actually a very potent nootropic in its’ own right, acting as an antioxidant, and optimizing dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin.
Piperine is good for improving memory, mood, and relieving anxiety.
The recommended dosage for piperine is 5-20 mg/day.
Awaken Gold has 5 mg in 2 capsules, and 10 mg in 4 capsules.
These amounts are within the guidelines, and should prove to be effective.
Awaken Gold – Formula Analysis
The immediate reaction I have as I look at the DNA of this stack is that I’m unhappy to see ashwagandha, tyrosine, and uridine have less than ideal dosages.
However, there are other considerations at play.
Ashwagandha is best known as an adaptogen that protects the nervous system from stress factors, and it can relieve stress at dosages as low as 100mg.
There’s no way it can be effective as a cognitive enhancer at 150 mg/serving.
That being said, I don’t think that’s it’s intended purpose in Awaken Gold. I think it’s job is to support L-Theanine as an anxiolytic agent.
Tyrosine improves performance by increasing neurotransmitter levels, but Awaken Gold already has CDP choline, PEA, and L-theanine doing the same thing.
The synergy between all the ingredients should more than make up for tyrosine being slightly under-dosed.
Finally, uridine appears to be poorly represented as well, but let’s not forget that CDP choline provides cytidine. Cytidine can be converted to uridine, which can make up the difference.
All things considered, I would say Awaken Gold covers all the right bases, and should prove to be effective.
So if the formula looks OK, how do we know the ingredients are top quality?
Awakened Alchemy – How Good are their Supplements?
Awaken Gold meets the requirements to be certified as cGMP compliant by the FDA. cGMP stands for ‘Current Good Manufacturing Practices’.
What this means is the ingredients for Awaken Gold are tested for safety, purity, and effectiveness by a neutral third party.
In addition, it’s free of:
- GMO Products
- Animal Products
- Addictive Stimulants
Awakened Alchemy also uses organic rice hulls to make their capsules, which are much easier to digest, and a lot better for your gut health.
These are all good signs that Awakened Alchemy is a very conscientious organization.
So is Awaken Gold worth a whopping $99 a bottle? Well, that depends…
Awaken Gold Review – Pros and Cons
I think Awaken Gold is a decent nootropic stack, but there are tons of supplements on the market to choose from, so you can afford to be picky.
These are some of the points worth considering:
- Holistic Focus
- Comprehensive Formulation
- High Quality Ingredients
- Excellent Customer Service
- Phenylethylamine (PEA) Allergy Risk
- Current Research on Noopept is Lacking
- Piperine Efficacy Varies

This is an excellent initiative, and the more people that catch on to it, the better.
2) The compounds in Awaken Gold have a synergy that makes them more effective together, and improves neuroplasticity.
This focus is in line with the mission statement of the company; allowing you to achieve your full potential.
3) The ingredients are very high quality, and are produced according to CGMP guidelines. They’re tested for safety and efficacy by a neutral third party.
Awaken Gold should do what it’s meant to do, and help you achieve your personal goals.
4) The service from Awakened Alchemy is excellent. They provide free shipping worldwide, and a 30 day money back guarantee.
They also offer discounts for subscriptions and bundle purchases. Their subscription service is open-ended, so you aren’t locked in for a set term.
Cons – Commentary
1) PEA has a half-life of 5-10 minutes, so its’ effects are usually very short-lived.
In addition, anybody with PKU, an allergy to amines, or who is using MAO inhibitors shouldn’t take PEA. Awaken Gold simply isn’t safe for them to use. Period.
2) Noopept has been proven to be safe, and has tons of benefits. However, very little research with human test subjects has been done to find out exactly how it works.
In order to get the full story, I suggest you read my full article on noopept; it can provide you with more context.
Clinical studies still need to be conducted to establish how effective piperine is at increasing the bioavailability of other nootropic compounds.
So that’s what I like and don’t like about Awaken Gold.
Now let’s hear the final word…
