The Best Memory Supplements for Seniors

So what are the best memory supplements for seniors?

In this article, I’m going to go over my ‘Top 10 List’ of individual nootropics for seniors, and where to find them.

Then I’ll share with you the 3 best all-in-one nootropic supplements.

They are absolutely the best memory supplements for seniors.

Studies in the U.S. have estimated that Mild Cognitive Impairments(MCI’s) are currently affecting approximately 10-20% of people over the age of 65.

Mild cognitive impairment is loosely defined as having issues with memory and focus without experiencing functional dependency.

Conventional medicine has limited capacities when it comes to deterring mental decline as we age.

As a result, many seniors and their families have been turning to nutritional supplements to more effectively address the issue.

If you have friends or family members that are struggling with day to day tasks because of poor mental health, this article is for you.

The first order of business is to look at things we can do to improve brain function for free.

Top 5 Habits – for Brain Health

This article is going to take a ‘Top Down’ approach where I cover more general recommendations first, and get more specific later.

The Best Memory Supplements for Seniors - Woman Sharing Top Down Plan

These suggestions might seem obvious to you, but they’ll lay down a solid foundation for better mental clarity and brain health.

So without further ado, these are the top 5 habits for improving brain health:

  1. Exercise Regularly
  2. Sleeping Better
  3. Meditation
  4. Listening to Music
  5. Expressive Writing

It’s easy to read a ‘Top 5’ list, but let me ask you something.  How many people do you think actually do these things every day?

Right.  Not many.  And that’s because doing them isn’t easy.

This is your chance to take charge of your mental health, and start something new.  Kind of exciting, don’t you think?

The Best Memory Supplements for Seniors - Start of Long Road

In any case, let’s take a look at these points in greater detail, shall we?

Regular Exercise – Increase your Cerebral Blood Flow!

Studies have shown again and again that regular exercise improves memory and helps maintain mental capacities.

One obvious advantage is that it increases blood flow to the brain.  This allows more oxygen and nutrients to reach our brain cells.

In addition, exercise encourages the release of neurotransmitters like dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin.

This not only improves mental clarity and function, but gives us a mood boost, and a more positive outlook on life.

There are 2 things I want to make note of here:

  1. Aerobic Exercise is Best
  2. Choose Activities you Enjoy

In order to see the benefits you want to enjoy, you need to get your heart pumping!  Whole body activities are the best.

Motivation is also a key ingredient that most people overlook when committing to a new exercise regime.

They force themselves to go to the gym, even though they’re bored or hate it, and then after a few months they stop going.

If you like golf.  Go golfing!  If you like swimming, do it!  And if you can join a group for your chosen activities, even better!

The Best Memory Supplements for Seniors - Older Couple Tango Dancing

You might have days where you’re feeling  a bit lazy, but once your friends give you a call or knock on the door, you can’t say no!  You have to go!

That’s why motivation is so important to staying consistent with your routine.  It can sabotage your efforts, or it can be your saving grace.

So in a nutshell, exercise improves our physical and mental health.  It also helps prevent issues like heart disease, diabetes, stroke, brain fog, and depression.

If you’re not already doing something physical you enjoy on a regular basis, I suggest you do so.

Your brain with thank you!

Sleep Better – for Mental Clarity

It’s common knowledge that when we don’t sleep well, we have trouble focusing and remembering things.  But why?

The Best Memory Supplements for Seniors - Tired Elderly Man

Scientists at Boston University recently conducted a study where they found that the brain cleans itself as we sleep.

Essentially, cerebrospinal fluid runs through the glymphatic system in rhythm with our pulse.

This action flushes out toxins and waste materials.

The end result is better mental function.

We also know that regular exercise helps prevent insomnia, encourages more regular sleep patterns, and improves quality of sleep.

Generally speaking, we should all try and get 7-9 hours of sleep a night.

Research has also revealed that it doesn’t matter what time of day you exercise, it’ll help you sleep better.

However, the intensity and duration of exercise are both significant factors.  You know what I’m going to say.

The longer and harder you work out, the higher quality zzz’s you’ll get to enjoy every night.

So whatever you’re chosen activity, you don’t have to kill yourself, but you should jump into it with gusto!

Meditation – Music – Writing – for Brain Optimization

Long story short, meditation helps us sleep better, relieves anxiety, and improves overall mental clarity and cognition.

Meditation is also convenient; you just need a peaceful, quiet space, and you can do it any time of day.

The Best Memory Supplements for Seniors - Elderly Woman Meditating

You also have the freedom to practice any way you like; you can be sitting, standing, or laying down.  You can use breathing techniques, or listen to music.

Relaxing music has been shown to lower blood pressure, regulate stress hormones, and increase the release of dopamine in the brain.

Breathing becomes naturally deeper, and our mood is elevated when we hear the sweet sound of music.

Last but not least, expressive writing has been shown to reduce anxiety, prevent depression, and provide improved clarity of thought.

The science also suggests that unloading our emotional baggage can enhance memory and learning ability by clearing the way for new information.

So these are the 5 practices that can get you more brain power absolutely free.  You just need the discipline to commit to them every day.

Now let’s look at some solo nootropics you can take to kick things up another notch.

The Best Memory Supplements for Seniors – Top 10 List

You may be asking yourself, ‘What are nootropics anyway?’.

Nootropics are basically any substance that can improve your mental capacities without any negative side effects.

If you would like to know more about nootropics in general, I recommend you read my article on the subject.

Based on the reading I’ve done, these are my ‘Top 10’ individual nootropics for seniors:

  • B-Vitamins – facilitate energy metabolism by acting as catalysts in enzymatic reactions.  Vitamins B6, B9, and B12 are crucial to DNA/RNA synthesis, as well as neurotransmitters and nerve tissues.
  • Bacopa Monnieri – prevents acetylcholine from breaking down, thereby enhancing the effects of CDP choline.  Bacopa also acts as a vasodilator and protects brain cells from free radical damage.

  • CDP Choline – provides 2 important nutrients to the brain; Choline and Cytidine.
    • Choline is a precursor to acetylcholine, the first neurotransmitter ever discovered.  It improves focus, memory, learning ability, motivation, and alleviates fatigue.
    • Cytidine is a precursor to uridine, which aids in the repair and maintenance of brain cell membranes.  Improves working memory and focus.
  • Gingko Biloba – increases blood flow to the brain, is excellent for improving memory, and has antioxidant properties. Gingko is also very good for reducing anxiety, heightened alertness, and faster reaction times.

  • Lion’s Mane Mushroom – best known for its’ capacity to encourage neurogenesis, or the growth of new brain cells.  Lion’s Mane improves memory, mental flexibility, and learning ability.  Drastically improves the capacity to maintain or shift focus.
  • Maritime Pine Bark Extract – is an extremely potent antioxidant; 20 times as effective as vitamin E, and 50 times as effective as vitamin C.  It also acts as a vasodilator and increases BDNF levels for improved brain health.
  • Noopept – increases both Nerve Growth Factor(NGF), and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor(BDNF), which encourages the growth of new brain cells.  Noopept improves learning ability, memory, creativity, and focus.

  • Phosphatidylserine(PS) – functional support ingredient that is used in brain cell replication.  PS is amazing at improving memory, focus, and overall cognitive function.  It enhances glucose metabolism in the brain, thereby increasing overall brain activity.
  • Pyrroloquinoline Quinone(PQQ) – acts like a fertilizer for mitochondria; the powerhouses that metabolize energy in our cells.  PQQ is excellent for mental energy, memory, clarity, and brain cell regeneration.
  • Uridine(UMP) – one of the 4 amino acids used for RNA and DNA coding.  Extra uridine in the diet accelerates the rate of reproduction of cells in the body and the brain.  Drastically improves memory, focus, and learning ability.

The Best Memory Supplements for Seniors – 3 Pre-Formulated Solutions

There are also some pre-formulated supplements that I think are great for helping seniors stay on top of their game.

They are:

  1. Mind Lab Pro
  2. Awaken Gold
  3. Performance Lab Mind

The company that makes Mind Lab Pro, Opti-Nutra, has some of the highest standards for quality I’ve ever seen.

Mind Lab Pro places a lot of emphasis on protecting the brain from free radical damage, and on long term brain health.

If you’d like to know more about Mind Lab Pro, feel free to read my full product review.

Another excellent option for improving your overall brain function is Awaken Gold, from Awakened Alchemy.

If you’d like to know more about Awaken Gold, feel free to read my full review.

Finally, the third option I think is worth your time and money is Performance Lab Mind.

Performance Lab Mind is also made by Opti-Nutra, the same company that makes Mind Lab Pro.  They only use the best ingredients.

That’s why I recommend their products all the time.

The main advantage of using PLM is it’s flexibility.  It’s a very basic supplement with only 4 ingredients.

It was purposely designed to be used as a base, so that people can customize their optimization plan with some individual nootropics of their choice.

You can read more about Performance Lab Mind by clicking on this link.  It’ll take you to my full product review.

The Best Memory Supplements for Seniors - Bottle of Performance Lab Mind Nootropic Supplement

The other nice thing about Performance Lab Mind is that it’s easy on the pocketbook.  If you want to compare prices on these 3 top grade supplements, this is a basic breakdown.

Mind Lab Pro

So if you think you would like to create your own nootropic stack, Performance Lab Mind makes it easy for you to do that.

You could combine PLM with some lion’s mane mushroom, bacopa monnieri, or PQQ if that’s what you prefer.

Please feel free to read any of the related articles I’ve posted here for you.

You can also ask questions here on this site, and I’ll be more than happy to help you.

The Best Memory Supplements for Seniors – Final Recommendations

In this article, I’ve given you a basic guide to preventing mild cognitive impairments.

Unfortunately, these kinds of issues become more common as we age, and can be early indicators of more serious conditions like Alzheimers’s and dementia.

If you practice the top 5 habits for better brain health mentioned above, that should help you gain better clarity and more energy right away.

Depending on how far you want to go down this path, you can also consider taking some individual nootropics to give your brain a boost.

(See my ‘Top 10 List’ of individual nootropics)

Going even further down the rabbit hole, I’ve recommended some pre-made supplements that I think are absolutely the best memory supplements for seniors.

Individuals with degenerative neurological disorders like dementia, Alzheimer’s, or Parkinson’s can also use these stacks to improve their quality of life. The Best Memory Supplements for Seniors - Cute Elder Couple

Historically, these kinds of concerns have been more common among the elderly, so these recommendations make the most sense for seniors.

However, I’d like to keep an open mind with this topic of discussion.

Memory problems are becoming more common among younger folks because of extreme stress, poor diet, lack of sleep, and other factors.

In other words, the target demographic for these kinds of products is starting to shift.

While I would still maintain that these supplements are the best options for seniors that want to stay sharp, younger individuals with memory concerns can also benefit from their use.

All right.  I think I’ve given you a good idea of what nootropics can do for better memory, especially for seniors.

In my next article, I’m going to cover bacopa monnieri, a natural nootropic that has way more benefits than you might expect!

You don’t want to miss it!

  1. Well! I’m a big time fan of supplements, and it is a good way to help boost ones’ health. However, getting supplements for seniors also has to do with knowing the side effects before getting attached at all. Personally, I think Mind Lab Pro might be worth mentioning to my parents, since they are in their late 80’s. I know this would really help them out big time. Thanks for sharing!

    • Hi Rodarrick,

Thanks for checking out my article.

I always recommend that my readers talk to their doctor first before using any supplements.  It’s difficult to know if there might be any interactions to be concerned about without a medical background.

If you think Mind Lab Pro could help improve your parents’ quality of life, by all means let them know about it.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

  2. As we age, the body may fail. That’s why we must take good care of our body when we are young; to prevent future issues.

The brain is the most vital part of the body, as it is act as the mother board, and that is why we must not stress or over work it.

Elderly people are a little bit different.  Their brains may already be damaged, and sometimes they behave like children.  Not because they want to, but because they are losing their mental faculties.

I am happy to see that over the years, supplements have been developed to help manage these conditions.

Mind Lab Pro seems to be a good example.

    • Hi Sabrina,

Thank you for reading my article, and I hope it can help someone you know!

We all have elders in our lives who have been our mentors, teachers, and guardians.  It’s sad to think that some of them can slowly lose a part of themselves with mental decline, but in a way it’s an opportunity for us to thank them for all they have done to support us in the past.

Yes!  By all means, share my article on your social media account.  Nothing would make me happier.

Thanks once again Sabrina, and please let me know if you have any questions.

  4. I have a family with a history of Alzheimer’s, so I’m doing everything I can to prevent my parents from getting it.  I’m also approaching my 50’s, so I want to prevent it for myself as well.

Mind Lab Pro looks good; it seems to have a lot of ingredients beneficial for the brain. I’ve heard about Lion’s Mane Mushrooms before and how it can help prevent dementia and even help prevent heart disease.

The pricing is not bad, I checked it out on Amazon and the bottle has 60 pills which means it only cost about $1 a day.

  5. My mom and dad are both in their 70’s and I think they could benefit from taking these supplements to improve their cognitive function. I like how these supplements can provide a wide range of benefits. I am just wondering though, can anyone in their late 30’s with memory problems, benefit from taking them as well? Thanks.

    • Hi Cathy,

First of all, thanks so much for reading my article.

The answer to your question is yes, absolutely.  The ingredients list in these supplements put more emphasis on giving the brain the nutrients it needs to heal itself, as well as to shield the brain from oxidative damage and/or stress hormones.

Other stacks might place a little more focus on performance enhancement.

Let me put it to you another way.  If I had a friend who was younger, but had suffered a concussion from falling off a ladder, I would recommend either Mind Lab Pro or Awaken Gold to them because of their targeted formulations.  Especially if they were having issues with memory.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.  Just post another comment here.

  6. Hello Michael,

I must say, maintaining optimal brain health encompasses several areas of self-care.  This includes adhering to a healthy diet and lifestyle, managing stress, and socializing regularly.

Taking dietary supplements can also help promote brain health.  This is often necessary for seniors since mental capacities can decline with age.  They need something to enable the brain to do its’ job effectively.

I am impressed with all of the effort put into making these supplements to help people with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Thank you for sharing this article!

I just wish there were more supplement makers out on the market like Opti-Nutra and Awakened Alchemy.

You are so right with all of your comments, Sophia.  The elderly need to look at all aspects of their health, and even then, they still need help.  Supplements can often be just what they need.

  7. Hi Michael,

I believe very strongly that supplements can do a lot of good for people, as long as they can find the right one.

A lot of seniors start to lose their capacity to perform basic tasks, but with a good brain supplement, they should be able to manage.  The supplements you recommended all sound like good quality products.  I bet they could help a lot of older people enjoy their golden years more fully.

Thank you for this great post about the best brain supplement for seniors.

I think my step mother needs Mind Lab Pro. I don’t believe she is suffering from Alzheimer’s or dementia, but she definitely has some issues with MCI.

It looks like there are some great ingredients in Mind Lab Pro. It’s a high quality formula.

Thank you again for this, as I’m sure it won’t be long before I’ll need a good supplement myself.

    • Hey Russ,

Thanks for taking a look at my article.  I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts.

I would like to recommend that you read my latest article on Lion’s Mane mushroom as well.  Reason being is that Alzheimer’s and dementia are much easier to prevent than to treat after the fact.

Lion’s Mane is one of the key ingredients in the ‘Secret Sauce’ for Mind Lab Pro, because it initiates the growth of new brain cells; a very rare and valuable characteristic for a nootropic.

The rate of cellular reproduction in the brain slows as we age, and Lion’s Mane helps elderly folks with that issue very effectively.

Please get your mother in law to read one or both of those articles, and let me know how it goes.

If you have any questions, just give me a holler!

Then maybe our family experience would have been different.

We lost 3 members to dementia, and there was a lot of anxiety in the family.

A friend asked me to read this article because I will be conducting a workshop where I have to make a presentation on Caring for the Elderly.  One of the things I intend to discuss are Supplements for the Elderly.

We are going to have 300 people in attendance, and I think I have some extra knowledge that I can add to my presentation now.

When talking about Supplements for the Elderly, I want to refer to your website to help the families of our elderly parents.

If you are going to be speaking about supplements for the elderly, please do refer them to my site.  I do think that Mind Lab Pro is probably the best solution for them.

That being said, Lion’s Mane Mushroom is also an excellent nootropic for older folks.  You might want to have a look at my latest article as well to find out more.

That way you can sound like a real pro at your presentation!
